Need Visa for overnight stay in Shanghai, China less than 24 hrs

I am American who works for the Air Force in Okinawa, Japan. My wife is Filipino citizen, we are traveling to Australia in December on our honeymoon. The flight we are taking requires us to stay overnight in Shanghai, China ( less than 24hrs) before we continue on to our final destination Okinawa, Japan. I would like to stay in a hotel not in the airport for the night. Will we be able to do this? Will my wife need a visa for the time we are there, and if so can you provide proper forms she will need to fill out for this? Thanks for your help!

You are not required visa for this, but your wife needs to apply for a transit visa in advance if she want to leave the airport during stopover. If she will apply in US, both Visa applicationn form V2011A and V2011B are required. They are available at page https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/visa.htm
