Paying for small items in China

I am touring China with an american tour group. They suggest that I pay for small items and gratuities in US$. Is this acceptable? I would rather use local currency. How do I go about, are there ATM's at Beijing Airport to draw money?

Yes, some shops in China do accept US dollars. As I know, gratuities in US$ is acceptable in a large scale including hotels, restaurants and guides. If you prefer to use local currency, it's also ok. You can either change the money at most of the Chinese airport of Bank of China when you are in China.
