About:China Tourist Visa

Is a transit visa required if landing twice in China on way to Europe?

We want to travel Southern China Airlines from Melbourne Australia to Manchester UK - the carrier lands twice in China (Guangzhou and Beijing) - our agent says because we land twice we need a visa (we do not intend to leave the airport and are just passing through) - is this true? - thanks Craig
