hotel reservation inquiry

Hi, are they really strict about hotel reservations i.e. number of persons reserved in obtaining china visa? because I am planning to book only one room since my companion is not yet sure if he will come or not. but four of us will apply for the visa. are they really strict about hotel reservation? thanks
