Do I need visa for one night stay? When you are on transit?

My husband and I will travel via Air China from Sydney to London, on April 2012, on our way back to Sydney on May, we will stay overnight in Shanghai acording to our travelling information.
Our question is: Do we need to apply for visa in Sydney or it's give at Shanghai when we arrive?
