You need a single entry Chinese tourist visa (L visa) if your trip is Beijing, Xian, Shanghai - Hong Kong - Macau,

you need a double entry Chinese tourist visa (L visa) if your trip is Beijing, Xian, Shanghai - Hong Kong - Macau - Mainland China

Hong Kong and Macau are two special administrative regions, they apply different exit and enter controls from Mainland China, you don't need a visa to Hong Kong or Macau.
