About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

11 hour lay over

so am i to understand that i can leave the airport and go into town with OUT a visa?

Citizens of the following 30 countries are permitted to transit Shanghai for up to 48 hours without a visa: USA

Yes, you are right, but you have to provide you hold valid passports, visas for the onward countries, final destination tickets and have booked seats.
