And the towel are usually red. It is a piece of red silk in fact. It was first a towel just on the head top to proof wind. Till the Tang Dynasty, it became bigger, covering the head till above the shoulder. It was women's ornaments. Then it was popular in folk and became an ornament in old marriage custom. It mainly meant to express: cover the face and cover the shy on ladies' face.
Why parents choose who you marry?! This is related to social regulation and virtue standard in old time. Marriage was decided by ladies parents, especially father. Women usually stayed and home and did not went out. They should abey their parents' decision.
