Are student visas multiple entry ?

I am studying in China and have just got a new student visa that allows me to stay another eight months. I am thinking of visiting Thailand for a week and while the staff at my school think I can simply come back with no problems, they haven't had much experience.

I have a British passport

if you are holding China student visa, you should have applied a temporary residence permit from the local public security bureau within 30 days of your entry into China, right? Then you will be allowed to enter and exit China for unlimited times with the residence permit within its validity.
