About visa if my flight transfer in China

I'm a Vietnamese and I'm studying in Japan. Howevwe, I'll come back to Vietnam in March. My flight is using China Southern Airlines and transfers in China before getting to Vietnam. So I want to ask that do I need to apply for a Chinese visa, if I don't get out of the airport?

How long will you stop at the airport even if you won't exit the airport? If you will stay at the airport for less than 24 hours, then no visa will be required.
