6 hours transit in Guangzhou. Do I need a visa to go out to a hotel?

My wife and I will be traveling Amsterdam-Auckland in July 2012, transiting Guangzhou. The transit time is approximately 6 hours. Will we be able to leave the airport to sleep in a local hotel and will we need a visa?
If we do not leave the airport, will we need a visa?

In principal, a visa is required if you leave the airport during 6 hours stopover, however, it is possible for you to get a 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, please show your valid passports and the flight tickets, then you don't need to apply for a transit visa in advance. If you don't leave the airport, a visa is not required.
