About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

staying in shanghai 1.5days prior to cruise--is visa necessary as one isn't if one flies not sails

feel this is unfair---saved for years for our 50th anniversary trip and every dollar is accounted for---didn't expect the cost of the visa and shocked that we need a courier to houston instead of mailing the form

You are in great shape. There are exceptions for Shanghai. Check info about visas online.

Sam, you need to appy for a China tourist visa for 1.5 days before taking a cruise in Shangai, the 48 hours transit visa exemption applies to the tranit between Hongqiao Airport and Pudong Airport, or within the Hongqiao Airport, Pudong Airport. You fly to Shanghai then take a cruise, you require a single entry tourist visa.
