Yes, you need a China tourist visa (L visa) to travel to Shanghai for about 7 days. The application by post is not accepted. If you live in Sarawak, Sabah or Labuan, please submit visa application directly to China consulate in Kuching, if you live in other parts, please submit visa application to Chinese Visa Application service Cneter (CVASC) in Kuala Lumpur, the embassy in KL doesn't accept China visa application from ordinary passport holders. The CVASC in Kuala Lumpur doesn't accept visa application by post at present.
