Do I need a visa to visit Beijing for a few hours

My wife and I both have US passports and will be arriving at Beijing airport from Bangkok in March and will have a 9.5 hr layover during daytime hours before flying to the USA. We would like to tour Beijing for a few hours. Do we need to obtain a visa while in Bangkok or can we leave the airport without a visa.

US passport holders need a visa to enter downtown Beijing. You may apply for transit visas in advance.
