Transit at Beijing Airport

Hi I am Australian, living in the UK and transiting through Beijing. Because I have a stop over of about 16hrs I was wondering if I am able to leave the airport? Do I need a visa? Can I get it at the airport?

If you leave the airport, you'll need a transit visa.
As you are an Australian passport holder, there is a great chance for you to get a 24-hour stay permit at the airport upon arrival. good luck~
