What happens in shanghai, china if you don't get your student visa renewed for over a year?

My boyfriend is currently being held in detention because he didn't get his visa renewed for over a year. He's been there one week now. He's a nepalese citizen. Does anyone have information about what will happen?

You need to call the university which he studys to ask for help, he will be fined, then renew his student visa, continue to study in Shanghai.
