can we take back old passport after submitting for renewal of new passport?

My boss has several business trips and other VISA to apply but her passport pages are running low. She is submitting new Chinese passport application in person at China Embassy of Singapore. Can she take back her old passport on the same day? We understanding the process of renewal will take 10 working days. However, she is traveling 4 days later after submission for new passport application.

Yes, she can take back her old passport on the same day of submission for renewal of passport. After the 10 working days of processing, she hands over her old passport and pick-up receipt to collect her new passport, the old passport will be chopped out a corner and handed it to her. She can collect a new passport and an old passport with a chopped corner.
