You can apply for a China tourist visa (L visa) for family visit in UK, fill in the China Visa Application Form V.2011A on computer, then print it out. After you entering China, please go to the local Exit-Entry Administrative Department of Public Security Bureau in the city where your Chinese wife lives to apply for a 1 year residence permit. The marriage license, your wife's Chinese national ID card and household registration sheet are required to provide. Even though the application of residence permit is denied, you can apply for extension of your L visa.
