About:Chinese Consulate in Melbourne

We will be staying with family in Melbourne (from SA) can we obtain visa for Shanghai there?

Yes, you can apply for China visa in Melbourne. but you need to provide valid Australian visa as well as entry record, both the original and the copy. If South African nationals are free of visa to Australia or with ETA and electronic visa, Australian entry record should be provided, both the original and the copy.
