is it a must requirement for us to buy round trip ticket and a hotel reservation in advance before applying for visa? what if the chinese embassy denied our visa application? plane tickets are non refundable and so is the reservation fee on our accommodation.

Yes, you have to buy round-trip tickets and hotel reservation in advance before applying for a China visa. If Chinese embassy denies your visa application, you will lose a large amount of money if plane tickets are not refundable and the reservation fee for accommodation is not refundable. We can't do nothing, it is the rule of China embassy in the Philippines, we just follow it.
