long layover in Beijing do we need a visa to leave for the day?

My wife and I arrive early morning (1:00am)and do not depart until 9:30pm (21:30). Can we leave the airport if we booked a hotel to get rest and then return for our flight if we do not have a visa?

In principal, a transit visa is required because you will leave the airport during the stopover. However, as I know, aliens of developed countries can get a 24 hours stay permit when they arrive in the Beijing airport for transit, once they get the stay permit, they can leave the airport.

USA passport holders are not allowed to apply for a visa on arrival, I don't know whether they are allowed to get a 24 hours stay permit or not. You'd better contact your airline company to enquire it.
