Do I need to buy a return airline ticket back to the US if I want to go to China with a multiple entry tourist visa and don't know my return date yet?

You don't need to buy a return airline ticket back to the US if you want to apply for China tourist visa. It is not required for tourist visa application. However, someone airline companies refuse passenges to board the flight if they don't have the return ticket, you'd better contact one airline company to enquire it.
