Do I need a multiple entry visa to China when staying in HK and traveling to mainland China?

I'm staying with friends in Hong Kong and would like to travel from there on several occasions to mainland China and back to Hong Kong. Do I need a visa entry for each time or can I cover the whole pwriod with one visa?
