Applying for tourist visa while having a residence permit

I presently have a Chinese residence permit. It expires on December 14th. Can I go to Hong-Kong right now and apply for a multiple-entry tourist visa now, even if the residence permit is still valid?

One cannot hold two China visas at the same time. So once you apply for a tourist visa, your resident permit will automatically turn invalid. BTW, I'm afraid you'll only get a single-entry China visa in Hong Kong.
