About:Embassy of Papua New Guinea in China

If I am in HK from PNG, trying to cross over to Mainland, do I still need a chinese visa?

I am a PNG citizen and current passport holder, doing to do a private visit to obtain suitable prices for exploration drilling rigs for less than 3 months in mainland and HK.

You need a Chinese visa to Mainland, you don't need a visa to HongKong if the each stay in HK is less than 90 days. If you don't have a company or supplier in Mainland, you can only apply for a tourist visa (L).
