Ordinary passport holders of Singapore can stay in mainland China for up to 14 days without a visa. So you don't need a China visa to get out of the airport.

Thanks David! Appreciate the quick reply. However, I have an AUSTRIAN passport... will that qualify me for a stopover without visa? Thanks in advance!

Australia passport holders need a transit visa for the stopover in Beijing (get out of the airport and check into an airport hotel). If you still have time to get a transit visa, please apply for it. If you don't have time to do it, you can try to apply for 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in Beijing airport, once you get the permit, you can go out of the airport to check into a hotel.
