How to get to the Hanging Temple and Yungang grottoes in Datong from Beijing?

Hi, My boyfriend and I will be in beijing in october and we would like to visit The Hanging Temple and Yungang grottoes in Datong . We can visit them on the same day? How long does it take? And what advice do you ride? We think we have to take the train Beijing - Datong on the night of 22 oct. to arrive at about 5 am on 23 oct. and then take the train after visiting the temples in the evening. Thank you!!

We just got back from China last week. We visited both the hanging temple and the Yungang Grottoes in one day. We arrived at Datong the day before by train from Beijing (6 hours). After visiting both sites we took the train to Xian. We only slept one night in Datong. One of the best places we visited in China! You should't miss this!
