Since you are living in US and being a new comer to China, you are not eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit. You can enter China first with an general L visa. Then, apply for a temperaray residence permit at your wife's local PSB within the validity of the said visa. This permit can also be issued as a long term family visit visa (L). It is good for one year and can be extended in China before it expires.

Thanks Joe.
So what is the 2 year visa? That's really what I am interested in. Multiple entries and exits as we still plan on spending some time in the states.

Mack, sorry to tell you that it is hard for you to get a 2 years residence permit because your wife is Chinese citizen with US green card. If your Chinese wife doesn't have US Green Card and live in China, it is possible for you to get a 1 year residence permit.
