If you will stay in the airport during the stopover, no visa is required. But if you want to leave the airport for a one-day travel, you need to apply for a China transit visa in advance through Chinese consulate in Vancouver. The required documents are as follows:
a. A valid visa from the destination country/region and tickets for connection flights.
b. An original copy of passport with enough blank visa pages, valid for at least another 6 months.
c. Fully completed copy of Visa Application Forms (Form V2011A and Form V2011B).
d. One recent 2×2(in.)-sized color passport photo.
