Tourist registry with a local public security bureau within 24 hour of arrival in China

I read somewhere that all foreign visitors must register with a local public security bureau within 24 hour of arrival in China. I have never done this before on any of my previous trips. Is this a new rule, if it's true?

yes, it is true. There is such a regulation. Usually this can be done in the reception of the hotel. If you just come in for a few days and then leave, not necessary to register at a local public security bureau.
