travel to Suzhou or Hangzhou from Shanghai

Hi guys, I would like to have 1 day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou from Shanghai. but i dont know how to choose. I wanna visit water town mainly, then some other places like gardens or lakes. I have a roughly plan like going to Suzhou to see gardens, then go to a near by water town or back to Zhujiajiao, another plan is to Hangzhou so see the Xi Hu then go to Wezhen or Xitang then finally back to Shanghai. Any suggestions if I should visit Suzhou or Hangzhou? Is there any other advice for a 1 day trip? Thanks a lot for help!!

Suzhou is the best place for you to visit gardens while Hangzhou is nice for you to visit the Lake. Well, Xitang or Zhouzhuang is a nice water town. Both of the tro itineraries are Ok. Well, I'd like to visit Suzhou and then go to Zhouzhuang. Finally, back to Shanghai. I suggest you join a one day local tour which would arrange the best route for you.

I have been to all the water towns(Zhouzhuang, tongli,Luzhi, jinxi, xitang, fengjin, zhujiajiao, wuzhen etc.).For me,I love Xitang,Tongli and Luzhi best.Zhouzhuang is very much touristy.

Since you wanna visit water town mainly,Hangzhou won't be your choice.
Suzhou is the city of garden and nice to take a boat trip on the grand cancal, experience the thousand year old shantang street, along with riverside homes.
You can visit:
Shanghai - Suzhou - Tongli for a one day trip.
