5,000 US dollars (or equivalent in any foreign currency) or 20,000 CNY is permitted. If you have more than this amount, related documents will be needed and you need to declare to the customs.

I have a resident China visa, born and raised in Western NY. I only travel to and from China with enough for traveling expences because some airports due not have ATM's. But I have not found a Bank ATM, my Visa Debit card does not work at and there has never been a ATM fee. My stores and restuarants will not take charge cards so carry enough cash with you.
When you ask how much an Item is in a store and they tell you an amout think would I pay that in Australia. Example if you are told an Item is 100 Yuan or Quai, think would I pay $100 Aus $$ for that in Australia if not your paying to much and they price was raised because you are not Chinese. If you convert it to Aus. dollars your thinking like an Ausralian in China and you will find the same item next store or around the corner for a fraction of the price . Think like a Chinaman and you will save a lot of money
