Knitting needles allowed in my carry-on baggage?

Are knitting needles allowed in my carry-on baggage? Does it matter whether they are straight or circular needles? Does it matter if the needles are metal, bamboo, or wood?

I sugget you put them in check-in lugguage. That is safer.
