About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

I am going to China on an F-visa for 3 months. I plan to go to Hong Kong sometime and since multiple entry visas are hard to get, I heard you can apply for re-entry back to mainland China in Hong Kong? Does Hong Kong offer visas for a US citizen like me back into China?
