About:China Visa Renewal and Extension

I am a US citizen and I am currently in Shanghai, China on a Visitor 'L' Visa. I originally got my China visa in Hong Kong and entered China in Shanghai. I have extended my visa twice now. My visa expires on 8 March 2011. I have heard previously that I can not extend my visa a third time and must leave the country, such as returning to Hong Kong, the US or my country of domicle in Australia to get a new visa to re-enter mainland China.

Is this correct or can I extend my current visa again?

Your earliest reply is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Christian Martenson
