I have to attend a 3 days training in Shanghai. Do I need an invitation letter from the trainers or company providing the training? I am an american citizen by the way. What type of Visa do I need to apply for?

According to China visa regulation, you are required to apply for a business visa to China for training purpose. But for only 3 days, I think you can apply for a tourist visa instead, and it is easier for you. No invitation letter is required in this case.
