hi, am planning a visit to shanghai this summer. Hope to see some of the less touristy sort of places. Places not obviously tailored to attract tourists. Hope to see more of the real shanghai.

Well, you may mean to see trhe natural part of Shanghai. I advise you to visit Zhujiajiao , Qibao Ancient Town, Shanghai Old Street  and Fengjing Ancient Town .
