You can't apply for tourist visa along with student visa, you can only hold one Chinese visa, once your new visa is issued, your previous Chinese visa will be void automatically. In another words, you can visit Beijing and Shanghai by holding your X visa, you don't need to apply for tourist visa. However, you can only get a single entry X visa rather than mutiple entry visa, generally speaking, X visa is single entry, you should apply for residence permit under the help of the university within 30 days after arrival.
