What would you recommend, Beijing and Hongkong during the New Year?

Hi. We would like to travel to China for New Year and can't decide between Beijing and Hong Kong, what would you recomand? If we would go to Beijing for New Year ( 26th of December - 3rd of January) could you please help us with some info: are the museums and most of the tourist attractions opened during this period? I know that chinese celebrate New Year on a different date, but is there smth going on on the 31st of dec -1 Jan? Thank you.
