About:Chinese Consulate in Melbourne

I am indian passport holder with australian visa 485 and travelling to shanghai on 22 dec 2010 by china eastern airlines from melbourne to delhi. My stay at airport is nearlly 19 hours, and return on 12 feb 2011 staying nearlly 8 hours. Airline providing me hotel, but i want to see shangai or do some shopping . Can u suggest me how can i get visa for shangai, and where i have to apply.?

I believe you will have to obtain a normal tourist or transit visa.. there is very little information on transit visas but they do appear to cost the same as a tourist visa, so you might as well get a tourist visa. There are exemptions for citizens of the following countries for stays of up to 24 hours for travellers transiting Shanghai airport...but not India.....Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,USA.

Sorry, I didn't finish answering you. You should apply for visa from the Chinese consulate in Melbourne
