We are trying to decide on a mini tour of Hangzhou & Suzhou. Is it possible to hire a taxi from the hotel by the day, say to take us from Shanghai to Hangzhou and travel around Hangzhou for the whole day, then catch a different taxi the next day to travel to Suzhou and around?

If you are going out to suzhou - take the train! It is fast, cheap, and safe. You can purchase "first class" or reserved seats at the station on the day of your travel. I think it was $20 a person when I used it. Then get a taxi in suzhou.
