Safe to visit there alone. First, go to Shanghai Railway Station from bund area by bus, subway, or taxi, for it is not very far. You can take G or D trains to Nanjing, 2 hours or so. G trains are faster, which takes a hour or so. You can take bus 1 or subway Line 1 to Fuzimiao directly. The nearest subway station is Sansha Jie Station.

1. From Bund Area to shanghai Railway station:
By subway, you may take line2 at East Nanjing Road , get off at People's Square, change to line1 to the station;
By bus, you can take bus no.64 at Jiangxi Mid Road Hankou Road and get off at the Railway station, or take bus no.928 at East Nanjing road and get off at the station;
By taxi, it takes about rmb20.
2. You may get off at Nanjing station. You can search the trains at China Trains(https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/) by entering the leaving and arriviing stations.
3. After arriving at the Nanjing railway station, you can take subway line1 to Sansshan Jie station and then walk to the temple. you can also take bus no.1 at the railway station and get off and the temple station. If by taxi,it takes about rmb30.

Of course it is safe. This is China. I would take the fast train , then get a taxi to Confucious Temple. Walk around, eat, buy a few things. Enjoy yourself.
