The weather of recently is not very cold, but warm long-sleeved shirt and windproof jacket is required. Oct is a nice time to climb the Great Wall although strong wind may happen on the top.

As for hotel, it is suggested that you book one around Tiananmen, Qianmen or close to subway which could take you to most attractions of Beijing. I think you could refer to this website's recommendation in terms of your budget.

As for Shanghai, since there are not so many tour spots, it is suggested that you stay close to subway, such as People's Square, Nanjing Road, Jing'an Temple, Railway Station, Zhongshan Park.
