About:Directions for Use of Shanghai Public Transportation Card

Can I purchase and recharge the SPT card with a credit card? I'm traveling to Shanghai in a couple of weeks and I have heard that cash is the predominant form of payment.

If you recharge your card at some points inside the banks, I think credit card is acceptable, but if not, it would not be usable.
