About:Chengde Transportation

My husband and I want to go directly from Beijing airport to Chengde without having to fight traffic into Beijing town center to catch a bus or train. Does anyone know if we will be able to find a taxi or heiche from the airport to Chengde, and how much it would cost? I do see a posting dated July 2009 saying that a taxi would cost around rmb 300, but this seems too low, given Chengde is about 150km from capital airport - are taxis really so inexpensive in Beijing? Thanks in advance for your answers.

The one taxi from Beijing Airport to Chengde cost around RMB1,300 per trip. It is really expensive. I would not advise you to do so.
you can take Airport Express Train or Airport Shuttle Bus 3 to Dongzhimen and then take taxi to Sihui Bus Station, there you can take Bus to Chengde, the bus takes round 4-5 hours.
Anyway, you can choose a comfortable way as you like.

Thanks, Mr David. Why does the taxi cost so much? After my original post, I checked maps.google.com, which said that the trip was about 225km. I also checked the airport webpage (http://en.bcia.com.cn/ecotraffic/taxi.shtml) which said that taxis charge RMB2 per km, with a 50% surcharge for trips over 15km. So, that should be around RMB675, plus highway tolls. Are there other charges I don't know about, or is the airport webpage out of date and taxi rates are higher than it says?

Your calculation is right, but for the long distance driving, there maybe an extra empty driving back fee charged, usually 50%of the price, the longer the distance, the higher the charge would be. Plus the highway toll fee would be at least 100 yuan I guess, so about 200 for a round trip. Thta's why the price is so high. You should undersyand that it's not that easy to find a passager to Beijing from Chengde, so actually you'll bear the roundtrip fare.
