The requirements for renewal of your temporary residence permit
• Passport
• Accommodation registration printout from the police
• Employment or student documentation, such as alien work permit

do you have to be in China to apply for extension or you can apply for extension from outside china as well ?

Javed, yes, you have to apply for the extension at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB in China. You cannot extend it outside China.
