About:A-Ma Temple

We visited Ama Temple in Macau and there was a big pan with water where the tourists tried to make ripples in the water by rubbing their palm at its edge. What do you call this and why it is being done?

I'm told that they are praying by doing that. Sorry don't know more about it.
