Puzzled by your question! Where is your destination, Beijing or the desert? If you will come to downtown Beijing, I think 400~600RMB will be enough for entrance tickets, transportation and food.

Desert, so I suggested that you go to Xinjiang where you could find desert scenery as many as possible. However, I don't 2 days is enough for you to visit Xinjiang, but at least 7~10 days. Highly recommend you read about the Xinjiang introduction on this website.

Agreed - There really isn't 'desert' near BJ, though the grasslands are do-able in a 2-day trip. Many local agencies run trips, so I'd suggest a search for 'Beijing travel agent' or similar.
