About:Wuzhen Water Town

Hi there..great information on this site for which I thank you all! My husband and I will be in Shanghai for 1 week in August. Thinking we will land in Shanghai Friday night and stay 1 night there, next day take train to Nanjing, then Hangzhou (stay overnight), Wuzhen (by bus)(say overnight), Suzhou (by ?) back to Shanghai and spend last 3 days in Shanghai at Expo and looking around. Can anyone say if this is feasible? Any tips in this regard? Any thoughts/tips would be much appreciated. Cheers.

It is feasible. You can think about this too: Nanjing (G trains) - Suzhou (by bus) - Wuzhen (by bus) - Hangzhou (by bullet train) - Shanghai. It takes 5-6 hours by train, 4 hours by bus from Nanjing to Hangzhou, only less than 1.5 hours by G train from nanjing to Suzhou. It is half a hour back to Shanghai from Suzhou by bullet train and 1.5 hours from Hangzhou. Just for your reference.

Thank you Ms Emma. I am still debating about Wuzhen and Xitang. From reading blogs it seems that Wuzhen is more commercial and Xitang more authentic. Have you been to both? If so, which do you think is better? Cheers.

Hi, Ms. Kris. I have only been to Xitang. So, I can not tell how commercial Wuzhen is. Anyway, Wuzhen is more famous and bigger. I was in Xitang in March, last year. It is not big and quiet, few travelers. I didn't get there in weekend, so I didn't even buy the admission fee, although it is 50RMB only. In weekends and holidays, there will be people guarding at the lanes leading into the center of the water town to check tickets. If you want to go there, better on Monday-Turesday. No need to book a hotel. I found a nice inn with wooden bed and window and doors. I mean you can find a place to stay when you get into the town. Wuzhen has more to see and go at night. It is commercial. This mean it is exploited earlier with more complete facilities. Wuzhen has the blue printed cloth which is a special and favorable local product. Wuzhen has more museums or old residence than Xitang. If you have never been to a water town, get to Wuzhen.

Thanks again. I have decided on Xitang. I think I will like that very much. Did you manage to get around speaking english? We will be there during the week so I am thinking that I will leave booking accomodation till we get there. Hopefully with the Expo happening it will not be fully booked out in Xitang! Keep fingers crossed. Did you stay in a guesthouse? If so do you still have the details and did you have river views? Cheers.

I speak Mandarin Kris. I think it has problem to get around seaking English, but some visitors there may speak and you can see travelers from others countries too. I guess the Expo is one aspect, Auguest is still in the summer holiday, which means many students there. Yes, I stay in a guesthouse called 明榉坊 owned by a young couple who have two big white dogs and a cat. I once upload my pictures to facebook, but I didn't open facebook in China till now. You may try to find 'Emma Wong' to see if I am still on facebook. The free booking numbers is 400-8878-944. You can call them in advance in case of full bookings. I went there in ligtht season, generally April and May is the high season of Xitang. Good Luck~
