What is so significant about the silk road, and where did it stretch from?  HELP!

Xian, the capital city of the Tang Dynasty is regarded as the starting point of the Silk Road. The Silk Road streched to today's Turkey. It is the road connection and trade passageway between China and Middle and West Asia and even Europe. Later, there is marine sild road in South China, but the road Silk Road is the most significant one.
